The Complete Hosiery Guide

The Complete Hosiery Guide

Whether you're shopping for everyday sheer hosiery or a supportive control-top, this guide covers everything you need to find the perfect fit, shade, and style.

1. Understanding Denier

Denier (D) measures the thickness and opacity of the yarn. Higher denier = thicker, more opaque, and more durable. Lower denier = sheerer and more delicate.

  • 3–10D — Ultra-sheer: Barely-there look, best for formal occasions. Handle with care.
  • 10–20D — Sheer: Elegant and lightweight, ideal for work and eveningwear.
  • 20–40D — Semi-opaque: A balance of coverage and comfort; great year-round.
  • 40–70D — Opaque: Solid coverage, warmer, and more durable for daily wear.
  • 70D+ — Thick/Opaque: Winter weight, great for layering and maximum durability.

Tip: If you're new to hosiery or prone to snags, start with a 20–40D for everyday wear.

2. Shade & Skin-Tone Selection

Finding your perfect shade is about matching your undertone as much as your surface skin color.

  • Nude/Ivory: Fair skin with cool or neutral undertones.
  • Natural/Buff: Light to medium skin with warm or olive undertones.
  • Sun/Honey: Medium skin with warm golden undertones.
  • Caramel/Mocha: Medium-deep skin with warm or neutral undertones.
  • Espresso/Ebony: Deep skin tones with warm to cool undertones.

Tip: Hold the stocking against your wrist in natural light before buying. A shade 1–2 steps lighter than your wrist typically gives the most natural look.

3. Sizing

Hosiery sizing is based on a combination of your height and weight. Always check the brand size chart — one size does not fit all labels equally.

  • Petite (S/A): Under 5'4", up to ~135 lbs
  • Medium (M/B): 5'2"–5'8", up to ~160 lbs
  • Tall/Large (L/C): 5'5"–6'0", up to ~180 lbs
  • Queen/Plus (Q/D): All heights, 180 lbs and above

Tip: When in between sizes, size up — a snug waistband is uncomfortable and can cause runs.

4. Control-Top Fit

Control-top hosiery features a reinforced, higher-density panel from waist to hip to smooth and shape the midsection.

  • Light control: Gentle smoothing for everyday comfort; barely noticeable under clothes.
  • Medium control: Firms the tummy and hips; ideal for fitted dresses and skirts.
  • Firm control: Stronger compression; great for special occasions or all-day support.

Tip: Control-top panels should sit at your natural waist. If the panel rolls down, size up.

5. Toe Styles

  • Reinforced toe: Extra durability at the toe box — best for daily wear and closed-toe shoes.
  • Sheer toe: Invisible look in open-toe or peep-toe shoes; more delicate.
  • Sandal-foot (bare toe): No toe reinforcement — designed for open-toe sandals.
  • Pointed toe: Extra-long toe box for comfort with pointy-toed heels.

Tip: Match your toe style to your most-worn shoes — mismatched toe styles can cause premature wear.

6. Care & Longevity

Proper care extends the life of your hosiery significantly.

  • Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent or hosiery wash.
  • Never wring — gently squeeze out water and roll in a clean towel.
  • Lay flat or hang dry — never use a dryer or direct heat.
  • Store flat or rolled in a separate pouch or drawer away from sharp objects.
  • Apply lotion before putting on hosiery — dry or rough skin is the #1 cause of snags.
  • Use rubber gloves when putting on delicate denier (under 15D) to protect from nails.
